The Flooding of the St. Croix in Hudson
Having lived most of our lives near the shores of Lake Michigan, my husband and I often talked about how we would miss it, should we ever have to leave. We enjoyed the recreation it provided, celebrated it’s beauty, and snarled at the term “cooler near the lake”. But, now that life has transported us to Wisconsin’s western coast, we’re learning to appreciate a new body of water, the beautiful St. Croix River! Like Lake Michigan, it provides stunning views and multi season enjoyment.
For the past several years, the water level of Lake Michigan has been rising, and the size of the beaches in Manitowoc shrinking. It has been a slow process, and so sad to see happening. The same happened this week to the beaches in Hudson and the surrounding area! The torrential rains “up north” during the last week are now reaching the downstream cities and towns, and rising over the sand.
Hopefully, in a few weeks, our beaches along the river will return and families will be able to enjoy them for the rest of the summer. I wish I could say the same about the Lake Michigan beaches…
